ABOUT M. BLAIR MARSHALL, M.D. 
Director of Thoracic Oncology

     Dr. Marshall graduated from Brown University with a degree in fine art and received her medical degree from Georgetown University School of Medicine. She completed a fellowship in molecular biology and angiogenesis with Judah Folkman at Children’s Hospital. She completed her cardiothoracic surgery fellowship at the University of Pennsylvania and was recruited to the faculty there. In 2004, Dr. Marshall was recruited to become Chief of Thoracic Surgery at Georgetown University Hospital, where she started the thoracic surgery program, innovated multiple operations, and became internationally renowned.

     In 2019, she was recruited to Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Harvard Medical School where she was given the Bell Family Distinguished Chair in Healthcare Innovation, and was Associate Chief for Quality, Promotions, Mentorship and Inclusion, as well as Associate Program Director of the Integrated Cardiothoracic Surgery Residency Program. She most recently served as the institutional principle investigator for the FDA trial of a new single port surgical robot performing the first thoracic operation in the United States.

     She was an associate editor of the Annals of Thoracic Surgery for 10 years, the editor-in-chief of Thoracic Surgery Clinics for 9 years and is currently the editor-in-chief of Operative Techniques in Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery, an official journal of the American Association for Thoracic Surgery. She serves on multiple committees for the hospital, as well as national and international societies. Her research and clinical interests include minimally invasive and robotic techniques for complex thoracic procedures, development of low-fidelity simulators for advanced technical skills, and gender inequities. 

     In September 2023, she became the Director of Thoracic Oncology, Brian Jellison Cancer Institute, Sarasota Memorial Hospital. She has already begun innovating thoracic surgical procedures and expects to make Sarasota Memorial Hospital and the Jellison Cancer Institute internationally renown in thoracic surgery.
