ABOUT ANDY SANDBERG

An accomplished director, writer, and Tony Award-winning producer whose national and international career has been committed to new work and artist development, Sandberg was selected to lead the organization following an extensive national search.
Since joining the Hermitage in January of 2020, Sandberg has guided the organization through a period of significant growth and transition, despite the challenges of the pandemic and multiple severe hurricanes. Over the past five seasons under Sandberg’s leadership, the Hermitage has dramatically expanded its live programming; introduced dozens of new national, international, and regional collaborations; grown its revenue by over 4X; and overseen two of the largest nonprofit theater-commissioning initiatives in America. The Hermitage is now recognized as one of the preeminent new works incubators in the United States, celebrating and elevating the voices of diverse and accomplished artists spanning theater, music, visual art, dance, film, literature, and more.
Beyond his role at the Hermitage, Andy Sandberg is a director, writer, and Tony Award-winning producer whose theatrical work has been represented in New York, London, and throughout the U.S. He recently directed the U.K. premieres of Alan Brody’s Operation Epsilon and Jeannette Bayardelle’s Shida, earning multiple Off West End Award nominations, including Best Director and Best Musical. Additional world premieres as director in New York include Straight (Off-Broadway, NY Times Critics’ Pick); Application Pending (also co-author; BroadwayWorld Award: Best Off-Broadway Play, Drama Desk nom., Book Pipeline Prize); Operation Epsilon (four IRNE Awards, including Best Play, Best Director); Shida (Ars Nova and A.R.T., four AUDELCO noms., incl. Best Director, Best Musical); Craving for Travel (also co-author); and The Last Smoker in America, among others. In 2009, at the age of 25, he became the youngest producer in history to win a Tony Award. His Broadway and West End producing credits include the hit revival of Hair (2009 Tony Award); the Broadway revival of The Best Man, (2012 Tony nomination); and The Realistic Joneses.

Born and raised in Manhattan, Sandberg is a graduate of Yale University and a proud member of the Stage Directors & Choreographers Society (SDC), Actors Equity Association (AEA), and the Writers Guild of America (WGA). He has served on the boards of The Browning School (NYC), The Yale Whiffenpoof Alumni, The Yale Alley Cats Alumni Organization (founder / longtime president), Sing for Hope, and the Arts & Cultural Alliance of Sarasota County, among others.
